There has been a recent resurgence of interest in the rich and expansive composition that we call the Talmud. Study of Talmud has been central to Jewish life for over a thousand years, but it is not easy to approach or navigate alone.
Together, we will explore this dynamic and textured expression of Rabbinic creativity. The class will begin with background information that will help us find our mooring as we dive into study of the Talmud itself. We will then turn to texts that embody central concepts and values of Rabbinic Judaism and that have much to contribute to our lives and communities today.
All texts will be studied in English with both English translation and the Hebrew/Aramaic original available. Those who are interested in developing Hebrew/Aramaic vocabulary will have the opportunity to do so in collaboration with Memrise, a language-learning app.
